7 Things We Want to See in 'Wednesday' Season 2

There are a lot of possibilities for the second season of 'Wednesday', but here's what we want to see.

When Is Wednesday Season 2 Coming Out?

In September 2024, Netflix confirmed that the supernatural mystery will return to the screen in 2025. As announced earlier, the second season of Wednesday was expected to arrive sometime in mid or late 2024 but got delayed due to the strikes and change of filming location. So, for everyone waiting to return to Nevermore this year, this news might be slightly disappointing, but on the upside, you can expect new episodes to roll out at the beginning of 2025, so you can get a kooky start to the year.

Is There a Wednesday Season 2 Trailer?

Unfortunately, no. But there are some hints and peeks into what will be coming, which is good enough until we see the full-length trailer. First, during its official announcement back in 2023, Netflix teased fans with a clip where our favorite goth breaks into a half-smirk, half-smile, there is a promise of “more torture” ahead. And months later, at the Geeked Week 2024, the streamer revealed the first behind-the-scenes look at the second season. The minute-long clip works as a great sneak peek into the filming sets, with Luis Guzmán’s Gomez Addams saying to the camera “Hello my little storm cloud,” followed by Ortega’s Wednesday brandishing a knife and saying, “Let’s play dolls.” She also warns fans “If we showed you any more, your eyes would bleed,” in her perfect deadpan expression. The Wednesday Season 2 BTS clip also does a quick round of the cast members, including Emma Myers, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Victor Dorobantu’s Thing, and Joy Sunday, with Zeta-Jones promising that “Season 2 is going to be bigger and more twisted than you can ever imagine.” So, stay tuned for the latest clips, teasers, trailers, and a more woesome look at Wednesday Season 2.

During Netflix's TUDUM event, Wednesday's cast talked about their favorite fan theories. The video above is fun clip highlighting the fandom and how they embraced the series, giving it a life of its own.

How Many Episodes Are There in Wednesday Season 2?

At this time, there is no confirmation on the final number of episodes for Wednesday season 2. The first season of Wednesday had eight episodes, with each episode running approximately for an hour. So, the second season might follow the same format. It’s also possible that the popularity of the first season could encourage a higher number of episodes for the upcoming one. But we do know that Burton is directing four episodes in the upcoming season and that the structure of season 2 will be similar to the first one.

Who Are the Creators Behind Wednesday?

‘Wednesday’ Season 2: Everything We Know about Jenna Ortega and Tim Burton’s Spooky Reunion (6)

Wednesday is created and written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, with April Blair and Kayla Alpert co-writing. Both Gough and Millar are recognized producers, writers, and showrunners, best known for writing for films like Shanghai Noon, Shanghai Knights, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and co-writing Spider-Man 2. The duo also created and produced shows like Smallville, Into the Badlands, and The Shannara Chronicles. In a Collider exclusive, Gough and Millar hint at seasons 3 and 4 of Wednesday and how the show’s future could shape up.

The creator of iconic, modern classics like Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Alice in Wonderland, among many others, Tim Burton lends his creative genius to both seasons as director of select episodes, and serves as an executive producer, along with Gough, Millar, Alpert, Steve Stark, Andrew Mittman, Gail Berman, Jonathan Glickman, Tommy Harper, Kevin Lafferty, and Kevin Miserocchi. Paco Cabezas (The Umbrella Academy) and Angela Robinson (How to Get Away with Murder) will also direct episodes this season.

Wednesday herself, Jenna Ortega, confirmed that she will also be a producer in the second season. The star said,

I feel really, really fortunate to be coming on as a producer this time around... I’ve had experiences in TV where I felt my voice wasn’t heard, that I was meant to be a puppet. I’ve been told on sets, “You wouldn’t know because you’re not a writer,” or, “Just shut up and do your job.” From 12 years old, I’ve been hearing things like that. So, I went into Wednesday with hesitance. But I was fortunate to be working with someone like Tim Burton, who pulled me in his trailer one day and said that he wanted to be a soundboard for my voice.

What Could the Story of Wednesday Season 2 Be About?

‘Wednesday’ Season 2: Everything We Know about Jenna Ortega and Tim Burton’s Spooky Reunion (7)

A unique and delicious blend of supernatural fantasy, horror, dark comedy, and teen mystery, Wednesday’s plot takes from the original Addams Family story and is weaved into a murder mystery, making it a gothic noir-style whodunnit. The Netflix original series focuses on the daughter of the family, Wednesday, a teenager with latent psychic powers, who is sent to Nevermore Academy, a school for extraordinary children, her parents' alma mater. The first season explores Wednesday’s character and personality and how she slowly graduates from a closed-off, highly self-involved adolescent to warming up to friendship and love and helping her friends from a stalker and monster called a Hyde (yes, like the Robert Louis Stevenson story).

We'll keep spoilers out of it as much as possible but here's how the first season sets up Season 2:

In the finale of the first season, the Hyde is caught but it looks like he will most likely escape from police custody. However, a stalker makes themselves known, which is evident from some creepy text messages sent to Wednesday as she is departing the school. While she had thought discovering the Hyde was the end of all troubles, which is paralleled in the novel that she’s been writing since the beginning of the series, she realizes it’s all just beginning.

Although the plot details of the second season have not been revealed yet, Wednesday Season 2 is said to begin two years after the events of the first season. We can expect to see more of the Addams family dynamics in the second season, with more emphasis on each family member and their relationships, particularly on the mother-daughter relationship of Morticia and Wednesday, as the showrunners have explained earlier. In an interview about what to expect in the second season, the showrunners elaborate saying:

“We wanna sort of explore and sort of complicate all of those relationships going forward. The school was closed when they left, which gave us the most possibilities for season two, and I think that’s something that we’re excited to explore. For us, the show also is really about this female friendship, with Wednesday and Enid really being at the center of that. The fact that they really connected with audiences, it has been really gratifying. So, we’re excited to explore now that Wednesday’s dipped her toe into the friendship pool, what’s that gonna look like? It’s like, she hugged. That was her big arc for the season, right? So it’s like now, we do that. Then, the other thing that’s really interesting is to continue to explore the Wednesday-Morticia mother-daughter relationship as well, which now that Morticia knows about the power, it has given her sort of an idea of how that’s going to go. How is their relationship going to evolve?”

The show's stars have also talked about what they would like to see in the second season, with Emma Myers suggesting that Wednesday could use a "season of singleness":

“Anything is possible in the show. We haven’t really spoken about direction at all, so I don’t really know what the game plan is for anything. As far as love interests go for Wednesday, I feel like at least for a second season, she needs to take her season of singleness. She just had a whole fiasco with her men, she’s got to lay it off for a little bit. I would be deterred from dating anybody if I had gone through that.”

Jenna Ortega has also talked about what she would personally like the next season to be like saying:

We just started the writers room. I think we want to up the horror aspect a little bit and then get Wednesday out of the romantic situation, let her be her own individual and fight her own crimes.

✕ Remove Ads

Ortega has since followed up and confirmed that the series is leaving the teen romance in the past, and will instead focus more on horror, mystery, and friendships:

We’ve decided we want to lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more because it is so lighthearted, and a show like this with vampires and werewolves and superpowers, you don’t want to take yourself too seriously. We’re ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great.

With all that in mind, it looks like Wednesday Season 2 will take everything we loved about Season 1 and amp it all up to eleven. And there's no telling just where it could all go before we reach the end. Stay tuned for more!
